  Do not call this shelter if you find a lost animal. They will keep it from the owners until they are paid for having it, and are a kill shelter. They have a history of poor conduct, putting dogs down without giving much of a chance. We adopted a puppy who was very badly abused from the awesome Upper Keys Humane society, and my wife lost her leash when our puppy got startled, and ran away. She had the whole marina searching, everyone was looking for 3 hours. Someone finally decided to try calling the shelters, and it was here. My wife was treated like a criminal. She was already crying and upset, and they drilled her like she was a terrible person. They treated her really badly and never asked what had happened, only assumed the worst. We had an appointment to have her spayed, she had just had a heat, and could not be spayed right away. When we first got to the shelter, the man working there said we would not get her back until she was spayed, which is over a week away. I had the cops come, and when they showed up, the story changed and we were able to take her home. The lady who worked there said she spoke with the upper keys humane society and said she was told she didn't have her rabies shot. I had spoken with them because I was afraid we wouldn't get her back, and they told me afterwards that she did have her shots. We got lied to and charged a fee that was not legitimate. A "animal care coalition" should show a little care for the animal, and the people they deal with. They were incredibly rude, and not understanding at all. They don't know how to deal with people who are upset, or animals.
